The Red-Hot Tigers keeps rolling at the plate

Written By Daniel Smith
The Morehouse Maroon Tigers Baseball team has been hot over the last few weeks. Led on the mound by guys such as Saivion Mohammed (So), Casey Coates (Jr), and Jaiden Proper (Jr). At the plate, they have been led by guys such as Jaylen Green (Jr), Elijah Pickney (Fr), and David Coleman (Jr). The Tigers baseball team has a mixture of young and mature talent. With only one senior on the team this year, the Tigers have had to rely on many new faces to get them over the hump during their conference schedule. After an up-and-down start to their conference schedule, they caught fire over the last 2 weeks with sweeps over Lemoyne-Owens and AUC rival Clark Atlanta. The conclusion of the Clark series brought Morehouse’s win streak to 6 in a row and concluded the season series sweep over Clark 5-0. This hasn’t happened in over 10 years for the Tigers to gain complete AUC supremacy.
Though the Tigers have succeeded recently, many people don’t know much about baseball. Here are some FAQs to help members of the Spelhouse community have a better understanding of the game of baseball.
What is an Inning?
An Inning consists of a top half and a bottom half. The top half is when the away team hits, and the bottom is when the home team hits. This is seen as an advantage to the home team as they always get the last chance to score if they are down.
What is an RBI?
RBI means “Run Batted In” If a player has 68 RBIs on the season, he scored a base runner 68 times.
What do the white lines on the field signify?
The white lines on the field are known as the “foul lines,” showing if a ball is fair, “in play,” foul, “or out of play.”
The fences in the outfield or the wall are the boundaries between what is in play or a homerun only if inside the lines.
What is a single?
The batter gets a hit and advances to first base.
What is a double?
The batter gets a hit and advances to second base.
What is a triple?
The batter gets a hit and advances to third base.
What is a walk?
A batter has been walked (BB, or Base on Balls) if he advanced to 1st base because the pitcher threw 4 balls (i.e., pitches outside the strike zone).
What is a walk-off hit or home run in baseball?
A hit or home run that scores the winning run/s and ends the game. Since the home team bats second, this can only be done by the home team during the last inning of a game or during extra innings.
I hope those help give the fans of the Morehouse Baseball team a better understanding of what’s going on at games. The Tigers will need all the support they can get as they head into a big conference series against Albany State this weekend at Gresham Park. The Tigers invite everyone to come out to support and cheer them on as they look to make a push toward the SIAC tournament. As a baseball team member, I urge everyone reading this to attend these games; it’s an experience, and all baseball games are free admission. So bring a friend or someone close to you to look at the future of Morehouse Baseball.
