Former Morehouse College student-athlete Xavier Brewer has achieved a significant milestone in his professional career by securing a spot on the Detroit Pistons roster for the upcoming 2023 NBA Summer League.

During his time at Morehouse College, Brewer left an indelible mark on the basketball court. In just 70 games with the Maroon Tigers, the 6 feet 9 inches forward averaged 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds. His dedication has now earned him an opportunity to showcase his talents in front of NBA personnel.

After his junior season, Brewer finished his collegiate career at Alabama A&M, making 23 appearances for the Bulldogs.

Brewer’s achievement is even more remarkable considering the relatively small number of active NBA players who attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Currently, Los Angeles Clippers forward Robert Covington, who attended Tennessee State University, is the only active NBA player to have graduated from an HBCU.

Brewer joins a growing list of HBCU talents making waves in the NBA Summer League. Last week, Norfolk State’s All-MEAC center, Kris Bankston, was added to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ roster.

As Brewer takes the court for the Detroit Pistons, he represents a bridge between the rich history of HBCU basketball and the NBA. His inclusion on the roster highlights the increasing recognition and value of talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the professional basketball realm.

Brewer and the Pistons will face off against the Orlando Magic on July 8.

As the summer league tips off, fans of HBCU sports will be eager to cheer on Brewer as he strives to make a lasting impact in the league.
