The Morehouse Maroon Tigers suffered another tough loss, 36-22, in the home opener against Miles College. After a 6-game road stretch to start the season, this was also senior night for the Maroon Tigers class of 2024.

The Golden Bears came to Atlanta ready to play as they scored two touchdowns within the first two minutes of the first quarter. After Miles received the opening kick-off, sophomore wide receiver Jacquel Fells caught two passes from graduate transfer quarterback, Edwin Kleinpeter Jr. Immediately after, sophomore defensive back Brennan Melton scored on an interception during Morehouse’s first offensive drive making the score 14-0.

The Maroon Tigers can point to their struggles during the first two possessions of the game as the difference maker in this game. After the 14-point explosion to start, the Maroon Tigers matched every point.

The Tigers never let the game get out of hand as the defense came to play in the first half.

Sophomore Brogan Korta was instrumental in helping the Tigers score towards the end of the first half securing two catches during the Maroon Tigers’ final drive. The drive was capped off when freshman quarterback Miles Scott connected with freshman Michael Coleman II for a two-yard touchdown.

The score at halftime was 21-8, with Miles leading, as Morehouse would complete a two-point conversion to close out the half.

The Morehouse Tigers would try to carry that momentum into the second half but failed to do so.

That would come back to haunt Morehouse later in the game. Morehouse found themselves down by 14 late into the third quarter when they were able to force a turnover. Sophomore Tyler Davis recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown bringing the deficit to within six following another two-point conversion.

Things began to look up in the fourth quarter for the Tigers as they battled, looking for their first win. Korta ran a fake punt on a fourth-and-3 possession to ensure a first down and keep Morehouse on the offensive side of the ball.

The Tigers would turn the ball over with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter. Miles took over possession at the 31-yard line and almost immediately turned it into six points.

“We need to come out quicker in the first half. We came back the second half, but by that time it was too late,” Korta said.

Coach Corey Russ, Wide Receivers Coach for the Tigers, backed Korta’s comment about the Tigers’ offense this evening.

“When we get to the red zone. We have to be able to finish drives, and I think that’s something we need to continue to work on and get better at,” Russ said.

Morehouse looks to regroup next week as they face off against Fort Valley State on the road on Saturday Oct. 21st at 2p.m.
