The Morehouse Maroon Tigers have fallen to 0-9 after a heartbreaking loss that came down to the last possession of the Homecoming game to Kentucky State on Oct. 28th.
On Monday, Oct. 30th, following the loss, the rumor mill started to swirl about the safety of head coach Gerard Wilcher’s job. Questions of whether Coach Wilcher would be leaving or if the school would eventually fire him were the talk of HBCU Sports.
Nonetheless, Coach Wilcher denied reports of any such departure after just eight months of his tenure.
“I’m not leaving, and I refuse to resign. I will make them publicly fire me, if they want me out,” Wilcher told HBCU Gameday. “I know there are some people that aren’t happy that we haven’t been able to get it done, but I have not even been approached about leaving.”
Wilcher, a Morehouse College alumnus, was hired in the Spring after coach Rich Freeman was let go in November following the 2022 season.
“I think they forget that I took over a 1-9 team, post recruiting, and I may be the only guy in the league with no strength and conditioning coach,” said Wilcher.
Wilcher’s sentiments ring true and should speak volumes to staff, alumni, and naysayers. Cultures never change and should not be expected to change in one season; furthermore, the Maroon Tigers have not won a conference title in over 30 years or had a winning season since 2018.
This week, the Morehouse Maroon Tigers will face-off against AUC rival, Clark Atlanta University. CAU fired their head coach, coach Willie Slater, earlier in the 2023 season, after an 0-5 start. The matchup between the rivals is expected to be filled with fireworks, as it is every season.
