On Saturday Oct. 7, the Morehouse Maroon Tigers fell to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers 40-28 at Legion Field Stadium, in the 87th edition of the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic presented by the city of Birmingham, Alabama. After both teams struggled to score touchdowns in the first half, Tuskegee found a surge in the second half that the Maroon Tigers could not keep up with.
In the first seven minutes of the third quarter, the now 5-1 Golden Tigers opened the half efficiently on both sides of the ball, turning interceptions on defense into several big carries and touchdowns on offense. Tuskegee sophomore wide receiver Corey Petty picked up 60 receiving yards on a touchdown to help put the game out of reach for Morehouse.
Despite losing momentum, running back and Morehouse junior Charles Daniels IV had an impressive 131 yards that helped the Maroon Tigers on several drives. In his best game of the season, Daniels was the energy for the Morehouse offensive unit all night.
In his first start as the Maroon Tigers quarterback, freshman Miles Scott had 104 passing yards on 11 completions and 26 attempts. Scott’s efforts put Morehouse in several positions to score. After throwing an interception a minute into the game, he returned on the next drive and had three straight completions that set up a field goal and tied the game at 3-3.
Scott, however, struggled to find consistency with his receivers throwing four interceptions over the course of the game and two back-to-back to open the second half. The Maroon Tigers played a decent game and came within 10 yards of the end zone on majority of their drives.
All season, Morehouse has faced adversity maintaining their momentum on strong drives. They were three dropped passes away from being neck and neck with Tuskegee.
At the end of the first half, Morehouse was within six yards of the end zone and could have taken the lead. Instead, the Maroon Tigers ended the drive with a loss of 13 yards after Scott was sacked and a 40-yard interception caught by Tuskegee junior Christopher Roberson.
In spite of dropping to 0-4 for the season, the Maroon Tigers are excited for their home opener against Miles College at B.T. Harvey Stadium on Oct. 14.
