Morehouse President—David Thomas— has just announced that he will be stepping down. Today, Thomas sent out a mass email to students informing them that he will no longer serve as the college’s president.
He stated that his resignation will become effective on June 30, 2025. This upcoming year will mark the final in the current his 7 year presidential tenure at the college.
In the letter, Thomas gave no specific reason for his desire to step down from his position; however, he did state that he believed it was time for new leadership.
“The most challenging moment for a leader is to know when it is in his and the institution’s best interest to step down. After countless hours of reflection, I believe Morehouse’s future potential requires new leadership,” Thomas said.
In addition to his personal remarks, Thomas praised the Men of Morehouse (past and present) and the institution within his letter— citing the many accomplishments and achievements that Morehouse has had over the last 7 years. He mentioned record high application and admission rates, improvements to campus infrastructure, historic fundraising efforts, and other achievements.
Thomas closes the letter with a message of hope and excitement for the college’s next chapter.
“The College now has a blueprint embedded in our strategic plan and capital campaign pillars as a guide for the next several years. These achievements assure me that Morehouse is prepared to be a more profound influence in this Century than it was in the last,” he said.
Even though this letter signals his end as president, it does indicate his end at Morehouse. He plans on staying at the institution as a member of the faculty.
“After a period of rest, travel, and time with family, I will return to join the Morehouse faculty to teach, write, and aid in the completion of our capital campaign. I will forever remain committed to supporting Morehouse in its pursuit of excellence and delivering on its mission,” he said.
As Thomas prepares the college for his exit, students and faculty will also be preparing themselves for this massive change.
