In a game characterized by a sluggish pace and numerous errors, the Morehouse Maroon Tigers managed to secure a 62-51 victory over the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians on March 1, 2025 at Forbes Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, as they entered halftime tied at 27. The game remained close until the Maroon Tigers initiated a pivotal 10-0 run with 4:35 remaining in the second half. This shifted the momentum in their favor and helped avoid a potential upset.
“The team played with nervous energy and that they needed to settle down in order to execute on the offensive end,” Coach Whittler said to Maroon Tiger Anchor, Aaron Fields in the post-game interview when asked about the first half.
A significant factor in the Maroon Tigers’ success was their dominance at the free-throw line. The Maroon Tigers attempted 18 free throws, and made 12, while the Magicians had only five attempts, and made two. This disparity underscored the Maroon Tigers aggressive play and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Rebounding also played a crucial role in the Maroon Tigers’ victory. They outrebounded the Magicians 47-34, and secured 13 offensive boards that led to second-chance points and extended possessions.
A couple of standouts from today’s game were the Maroon Tigers’ Cedric Taylor III and JerMontae Hill. Taylor dominated with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks, while Hill contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Their performances provided the offensive spark the team needed in a game where both teams struggled with shooting.
Khalil Genwright was the leading scorer for the Magicians with 16 points, while Abdoul Sacko grabbed 11 rebounds. Despite their first-half efforts, the Magicians struggled with efficiency. The team shot 34.3% from the field and an underwhelming 21% from beyond the arc.
Coach Whittler made a post-game remark about his players and the talent that they possess, but he also quotes that “the team makes it more difficult on themselves when the team gets outside of the scope of what they are trying to do as a whole.”
The Maroon Tigers’ victory showcased their resilience in overcoming a scrappy LeMoyne-Owen team. The Maroon Tigers aim to carry this momentum heading into the quarterfinals to face the winner of Central State vs Fort Valley State on March 6th at Forbes Arena.
