Jeremy Hall has been counted out at virtually every turn of his life.
From growing up on the South Side of Chicago, to committing to Morehouse College with only $5,000 in scholarships, Hall’s faith in God has led him through every step of the way.
After all his hardships, Hall has laid out a blueprint on navigating college life and beyond in his book “The HBCU Hustle: Making Moves in College.” He hopes future generations can prosper where he was tested.
The book is a guide on how to navigate various paths as a student at a historically Black college. Scholarships, internships, academic success and a career after college aren’t guaranteed in the book, but Hall assures readers that the knowledge and skills needed to pursue them are within it.
“I did all the work so you wouldn’t have to,” he said. “That’s all I want as an author. For you to take this book and use it to your advantage.”
It took seven years for Hall to write the book but a trip to South Africa’s Table Mountain in 2025 sparked an epiphany. His book meant more than just documenting his life, but being of service to others.
“As you start on your journey of carrying your cross, you often fight with your flesh because it’s your flesh against your wisdom, your actual temple,” Hall said. “On that cliff, I was reminded of why I was put on this earth…ensuring that you put others first before yourself.”
Within every chapter of the book is a Bible verse that aligns with each tip and resource Hall provides. His favorite verse, Psalm 118: 22-23, encapsulates the overall message of persevering through every trial and tribulation life presents.
“You can be doubted your whole life, but it only takes one yes from God to turn everything around,” Hall said.
Alongside publishing, Hall intends to bring equity to the access of information on how to succeed in life. He believes individuals and groups have excluded others from this access for too long, judging them by their appearance, background and social status. Hall intends to break down the barrier of poverty and privilege with the information he has provided.
“I promise you, the $18 that you’ll spend on this book,” he said. Whether that be a paperback or a hardcover copy. You will look back on everything after you finish your senior year and be like ‘wow.’”
