Morehouse College’s Boxing Club will host its first-ever amateur sanctioned show in school history today at 6 p.m. in Forbes Arena. The event will feature 15 bouts, including fighters from Morehouse and boxing clubs across Georgia.
Following the inaugural Legacy Homecoming boxing match against Georgia State in October of last year, this upcoming event aims to be even bigger and better. Key figures such as former club president Jacobey Bell ’25 continue to play a pivotal role in growing the organization’s presence and influence.
“We started off with about three or four students, and now we coach over 1,000 people throughout Georgia,” Bell said.
Bell, a senior, founded the school’s boxing club during his sophomore year. Since its launch, the club has experienced consistent growth. The team’s first event was held in a parking lot after they were unable to attend a national tournament. Refusing to let the setback stop them, Bell and other members took the initiative to bring a boxing ring directly to Morehouse’s campus.
Looking ahead, Bell hopes to expand the club’s influence through competitive dominance, collecting more first-place belts and increasing collaboration with colleges across the country.
The growth of Morehouse Boxing over the past few years stands as a testament to student leadership, community engagement and a rising appreciation for the sport on campus. Club leaders such as Salahuddin Saafir, a junior and the organization’s publicity chair, have played a crucial role in its expansion through flyer distribution, graphic design and community outreach.
“You really can’t do this alone—the community is so necessary,” Saafir said. “I think it’s the community and the space that Morehouse Boxing gives us to help each other improve ourselves.”
