The Morehouse College New York Club and Student Government Association hosted the second annual Thanksgiving Sandwich Run on Saturday morning, continuing their commitment to serving Atlanta’s homeless community. Registered Student Organizations across the Atlanta University Center prepared 476 sandwich bags, giving thanks through service ahead of the holiday.

As SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) benefits face legislative threats, New York Club President Dwayne Jones emphasized the importance of student involvement to support families who may be affected by potential cutbacks.

“It’s important at this time, with everything going on in Congress right now, that we are able to provide food and items to families,” Jones said. “Doing community service is the best way to not only build friendship, but build true brotherhood and sisterhood at a time like this that we have now in America.”

Organizations such as the Morehouse Junior Class Council, the Morehouse Business Association and SGA underscore the need for a stronger, more consistent commitment to the West End community. MBA Vice President Kael Cotton reflected on the legacy of service embedded in the AUC’s history.

“Historically, the Atlanta University Center has served the West End community,” Cotton said. “Serving is a gift. As you give, you also receive.”

New York Club Secretary Madyson Middleton said she hopes participants leave with a renewed sense of gratitude for the work they contributed. While the process can be tiring, remembering the purpose behind the effort is what matters the most.

“You have to think about those who are less fortunate and those who will greatly benefit from the service that we’re providing,” Middleton said. “Remember that every time you get hot in a room or your hands get sticky, this is all for a purpose.”
