After a suspenseful campus-wide voting process, the results from the Student Government Association (SGA) elections have been unveiled, setting the stage for a dramatic runoff between presidential candidates Darion Johnson and Rollin Jackson Jr. Results were announced at Kilgore Monday at noon.
Johnson received 44% of the first election votes while Jackson trails behind with 42%. At least 50% of the vote is needed for there to be a winner.
The runoff voting is scheduled to open up Wednesday Mar. 20 and close on Mar. 22.This marks a crucial juncture in the electoral journey as students anticipate the selection of their next SGA President. With both candidates embodying distinct visions and approaches, the runoff promises to be an engaging showdown.
Both candidates expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from their peers while reaffirming their commitment to representing the interests and concerns of the student body.
This is not the only runoff occurring, as Caleb Cage and Derrell Green compete for Senior Class President, and Will Harper and Johnny Simmons for Treasurer.
Outside of the runoffs, many new SGA positions were elected. Josiah Harris was elected SGA Vice President, Hudson Osbourne was elected Executive Secretary, Tyler Mathieu will be the next Junior Board Trustee and Miles Moten will serve as the next Executive Director.
Jivonne Feliciano, Jeremiah Lowther, Damarion King and Landon Scott were all elected as the next Senators at Large.
Feliciano is excited for the opportunity to serve, as this will be his first time in SGA.
“I am humbled to be able to serve. Coming from someone who was not a part of SGA and wanting to make an impact, I’m now happy that I am able to be a part of the legislative senate,” said Feliciano. “I am reminded of what someone in SGA once told me: some will win, some will lose, some win but have nothing else better to do.”
The SGA election at Morehouse College stands as a shining example of the power of student activism and the enduring spirit of democracy, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of leaders and change-makers. This impending runoff is important as it lays the foundation for who will be the definitive leader of this campus.
