After a long day of work, the first thing people like to do is rest. That is exactly what Tyrone McMillian Jr, a political science and Spanish double major from Greensboro, North Carolina, created in the basement of Archer Hall. (outside of the weight room).
The purpose of Lounge 67 is to give students on Morehouse’s campus an opportunity to congregate inside of the gates.
“It started with not having a space on campus to study and hang out,” McMillian said. “I found it was hard to make my way to the library, and I thought that we needed something on campus for freshmen who spend most of their time on campus.”
The challenge was not just starting it and getting people to come, but building it from the ground up by himself.
“I did it by myself,” McMillian said. I put down flooring, got couches and bean bags from my supervisors in Archer Hall.”
For McMillian, going outside to classes and events didn’t allow for actual connections to be made, which birthed the idea of the lounge.
“I felt like last year, there wasn’t really a place to do that with our brothers on campus,” McMillian said. “It was in freshman orientation, crown forum, or brown street. I just felt like having this space would make more casual interactions.”
Students at Morehouse who share the sentiments, are ideal persons to come and enjoy the lounge during the hours of operation. McMillian hopes that students truly benefit from this and it actually grows alongside the campus of the future that is being built.
“You can hope to see that there will be a place like that in the future. But to have it actually right in front of you right now is probably something that everybody would love to have.” McMillian said.
Lounge 67 can be found outside the weight room. If you would like to contribute or receive updates about Lounge 67, you can contact the Instagram page at morehouse.rif or at McMillian’s school email: [email protected].
