Morehouse football season is now here and with that come expectations from not only the players, but the students on the campus. The football team are entering their second season with Head Coach Terance Mathis.

The Maroon Tiger caught up with Coach Mathis and he discussed how he and his coaching staff feel about the direction in which the team is heading in.

“I think we’re better than we were last year. I had a full year to go out and recruit, and the guys are bought in”. Mathis says.

In July, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced its 2025 Preseason All-Conference Football Team. Four of those standout players attend Morehouse College.

On the First Team All-SIAC, senior defensive back Carlos Dunovant Jr., who is also a member of the 2025 Black College Football Player of the Year watchlist, made the team along with junior punter Seve Spruill II.

On the Second Team All-SIAC sits two members of the defense, senior linebacker and heartbeat of the team Sean Johnson and senior defensive back Tyler Davis.

Morehouse Football schedule

This year’s team will certainly become “well-traveled,” being featured in three football classics. To open the season, they will head up north to face off against Johnson C. Smith University in Boston, Massachusetts. This makes Morehouse a part of the first-ever Essence HBCU Classic. Following game one, Morehouse will go to the “Big Apple” and take on Howard University in the HBCU NY Classic.

When talking to Coach Mathis about the schedule and the upcoming season-opener, he mentioned the importance of exposure.

“You’re going to Boston, which is notoriously known as a white city,” Mathis said. “But in reality, there is a lot of black history there. To bring HBCU’s onto Harvard’s campus is a great experience for these young men”.

Just like any other team, the goal of this football team is to go 1-0 every week, but that mindset has reached further than on the field, says junior quarterback Khamar Carlisle. He states that there is a jolt of energy around this team following their spring practices.
