Randall Woodfin ‘03 has secured a historic third term as Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, winning nearly 75 percent of the vote on Tuesday.
He becomes the first mayor since Richard Arrington Jr. in 1987 to claim three consecutive terms, extending leadership he first began in 2017.
Woodfin’s closest competitors were Lashunda Scales, who received 4,781 votes, and Juandalynn Givan, who earned 1,395. Speaking at his election watch party, Woodfin addressed all residents:
“To the great people of this city, whether you voted for me or not, I work for you,” Woodfin said. “I hear you and I see you, and I want you to know that I’m ready to keep the city moving forward with you.”
Woodfin’s victory marks a milestone in Birmingham’s political history. Richard Arrington Jr., who served as mayor from 1979 to 1999, was the last to win three consecutive terms, making Woodfin only the second in the city’s modern era to achieve this feat.
The win underscores both his political strength and the continued confidence of Birmingham voters in his leadership.
With this success, it allows Woodfin to continue programs such as Birmingham Promise, which helps Birmingham City Schools graduates attend public colleges in Alabama, along with initiatives promoting inclusion across the city. Supporters celebrated online as well, posting messages like, “This is what we’ve all been waiting for.”
For Woodfin, the work is far from finished.
“The work isn’t done,” Woodfin said. “The next chapter is about finishing what we started and pushing it further.”
