The Morehouse family follows tradition, and a South Carolina native demonstrates that.

Samuel L. Williams graduated from Morehouse College in 1973 but returns to the school frequently for its annual homecoming celebration. Williams has attended the Morehouse homecoming for over 50 years.

“We had such a good class and once we started coming back… we really had a high spirit,” Williams said

Coming out of Johnston, SC, Williams received a full scholarship to Morehouse. After graduating with a degree in psychology, he had a career in school administration and ministry for over 40 years.

As an undergraduate student, he remembers building floats with his graduation class and local high school bands for parades before football games. They would walk down the street, now known as Martin Luther King Blvd, to Morris Brown College. Over time the parade transitioned to tailgates on Morehouse Campus.

“In the early 80s, a group of us started our own tailgate on Westview Drive,” Williams said. “We have been doing that for at least 30 years.” “I have seen it go from a small level to a tremendous participation.”

His most fond memories of the annual celebration are seeing his relatives. Samuel’s youngest son, Renard Williams ’04, and grandson, Jaiden Jones ’27, are a part of the Morehouse family and join Williams in the homecoming celebration.

Homecoming has been more than a tradition for Williams; It is a representation of the growth and brotherhood of a Morehouse Man.

“I’m a die-hard Morehouse man and it is quite a life journey” Williams said.

Williams looks forward to returning for another year as Morehouse homecoming takes place on Oct. 18.
