Yesterday marked a turning point in the Student Government Association (SGA) elections as the second night of debates was held in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. The debates were for the at-large offices, none bigger than the race for SGA president.
Each of the presidential candidates showed up ready to make their imprint on the student body and plead their cases for why they should be elected. The candidates were juniors Jeremiah Lowther, Linden Young, Kenneth Ugo, John Johnson and Johnny Simmons.
“I think they all brought different prospective roles. Some people brought their experience, some people brought connections, some people brought their outsiderness,” said Sterling Williams, a junior political science major. “I think it’s different from previous years, where it’s been more about personality and a little more messy. This year, it’s really about who can get the most work done.”
A constant theme throughout the debate was change. Whether those changes related to the Student Government Association, Morehouse College or the country in general, all candidates addressed the topic and gave voters something to consider regarding the gravity of this year’s election.
“At this period in time with elections, we got a lot,” said junior Stephen Jones. “I forgot who said it, but we are at a crossroads right now. We have a new president of America, and we’re changing presidents at Morehouse College. I think those will be really big factors. Our class wants to see results now, but sometimes you need to wait for long-term results.”
With all these factors and candidates in mind, voters are sure to have a lot to consider when election day arrives. However, one thing everyone can agree on is that they want Mother Morehouse to continue to thrive.
