Preview of the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic

Morehouse’s defense has been a bright spot for them this season, including senior defensive end Tyler Hunter, sophomore linebacker Daylon Land and senior linebacker Dantez Simpson contributing to the Maroon Tiger sacking the quarterback 14 times this season. However, the offense must put some points on the board to help support their defense.

Members of the AUC, it’s the time of our season again where we have another classic upon our hands. On Oct. 8, the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers will take on the Tuskegee Golden Tigers at Birmingham, Alabama’s Legion Field Stadium.

Unlike the HBCU classic at MetLife stadium featuring Morehouse vs. Howard, this classic will be held with two teams in the same division in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This conference is at a Division II level and has a total of 15 schools in the mix.

The Maroon Tigers have come out on a slow start as they are sitting at an 0-5 record. Whereas, the Tuskegee Golden Tigers have won their last two games as they sit at 3-2. The Golden Tigers won a thriller over Clark Atlanta University last weekend, 45-43.

“In our first five game we’ve probably had the toughest schedule in division two football,” Morehouse Football Head Coach Freeman said. “The only good thing I can see is that the talent level of the programs we’ve competed against prepares us for the meat of our schedule in October and November.”

Players to keep on eye on for Tuskegee is their quarterback David Malik who threw two touchdowns, rushed for a touchdown and combined for 250 total yards with zero turnovers last week. The Golden Tigers have a dynamic duo in the backfield with Tauren Taylor and Donte Edwards wreaking havoc, combining for over 330 yards against Clark Atalanta and each scored a touchdown in their first SIAC conference win over Allen University.

“We have to play guys that are ready to play,” Tuskegee Football Head Coach Reginald Ruffin said. “I’m happy that the message has resonated with each and every one of them”

The Maroon Tigers last loss came against the Edward Waters University Tigers. The final score was 20-49 after the game was postponed a day because of the hurricane weather. Though it was a loss, the Maroon Tigers were still able to get over the two-game hump of going scoreless.

“What you saw last week against Edward Walters that came off of new guys that really didn’t have the opportunity to play previously. That’s a blessing. The curse was they got the chance to play because those guys that did play previously were on the sideline with me,” said coach Freeman.

Morehouse’s defense has been a bright spot for them this season, including senior defensive end Tyler Hunter, sophomore linebacker Daylon Land and senior linebacker Dantez Simpson contributing to the Maroon Tiger sacking the quarterback 14 times this season.
