The Spelhouse Homecoming Tailgate is a Little Different This Year
Christopher Doomes, Managing Editor
For the first time in Morehouse and Spelman’s history, both schools will have separate tailgates. Morehouse will have two different tailgates of its own, one for students and the other for alumni.
Tailgate tickets for students and faculty are set at $15.00 per person. As for the alumni, their tickets are set at $30.00. Students will be charged for entry into both events, a first for the school.
“Both campuses have separate budgets, to make sure that they can cover those expenses, each campus has a charge for homecoming,” Sean Bland said, Director of Alumni Engagement and Communication at Morehouse. “You will need to pay for each event separately based on which one you go to and on which campus,”
Traditionally, Spelman and Morehouse have a joint tailgate on Morehouse’s campus. Many students are wondering how this Homecoming celebration will work.
“It just feels like we are forcibly being separated when our schools have always done things together,” Morehouse junior Alende Abuede said.
Beyond the school interaction, alumni engagement with current students is an integral part of homecoming and what makes the HBCU homecoming experience different. Rarely do you get to see a gathering of future and current examples of Black excellence in a concentrated area, interacting with one another. This is something that is possibly missing from this year’s experience.
This is the first Spelhouse Homecoming since 2019, and attendance is expected to be at an all-time high compared to past years. The administrations at Morehouse and Spelman spot this as one of the reasons for this unconventional way of conducting the student and alumni tailgating experience.
Given the information, homecoming this year is still expected to be a thrill you will not want to miss! To purchase your tailgate passes for homecoming at Morehouse, visit morehouse.edu.
