A sluggish start left the Morehouse Maroon Tigers playing catch-up Saturday against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls at Harvard Stadium in a 45-9 loss.
The Golden Bulls scored twice in the first quarter, missing its first extra point but converting the second to take a 13-0 lead.
Golden Bulls QB Avante George led a 95-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run, hurdling a Morehouse defender on his way to the end zone. A late field goal from Morehouse kicker Davis Rowe prevented a shutout, ending the half with a 26-3 Golden Bulls lead.
The Golden Bulls opened the third quarter with a 72-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brian Lane, though a false start set up a missed PAT that drew visible frustration on the sideline. Morehouse answered quickly with quarterback Miles Scott hitting receiver Kamrin Brunson for a 71-yard touchdown.
The spark wasn’t enough to secure momentum, and the Maroon Tigers lost to the Golden Bulls 45-9.
The loss drops the Maroon Tigers to 0-1 as they prepare to face Howard University on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. EDT at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
