CHICAGO – As soon as Barack Obama walked on stage, all you could hear was the roar of the crowd. Everyone gave the former president a standing ovation as he prepared to give Tuesday’s closing keynote speech at the Democratic National Committee.
Obama opened his address with his patented charisma and joking nature.
“This convention has always been good to kids with funny names, who believe anything is possible,” he said.
He spoke at the United Center about the historic nature of this particular convention, and its implications for the future of the country. He firmly stated how the next president of the United States will dictate whether this nation succeeds or fails in the future.
Obama called his audience to action, explaining how this time the nation is faced with a tight race between two divided parties. He told the crowd and those watching online that it was up to them to defend the America that they believe in.
Obama further appealed to his audience by echoing their concerns. He posed two questions that he believed spoke to the concerns of Americans everywhere.
“Who will fight for me?” he questioned. “Who is thinking about my future?”
Obama stated that Vice President Kamala Harris is the candidate who will fight for American citizens and think about their futures, while former President Donald Trump is not even considering those ideas.
“One thing is for certain, Donald Trump is not losing sleep over that question,” Obama said.
In response to hearing Trump’s name, the crowd began to boo. Obama was quick to halt the crowd’s negative response. Instead, he encouraged them to take action.
“Do not boo, vote!” he exclaimed.
Obama also heaped praises on President Joe Biden, Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Obama praised Biden for his character and achievement during his tenure.
Obama praised Walz for his humble beginnings and his authenticity. Finally, he praised Harris’ commitment to see the establishment of an America full of freedom and true democracy.
Obama ended his speech saying that America should work to minimize the divide that exists among its people.
“Our fellow citizens deserve the same grace we hope they will extend to us,” he said. “That’s how we can build a true democratic majority.”
Obama’s speech was on theme. He truly presented “A Bold Vision for America’s Future.”
