The Morehouse Lacrosse Club Aims for “Undefeated” Under New Coach, Al Watson

With the year 2025 approaching, the Morehouse Lacrosse Club underwent a coaching change involving first year lacrosse coach, Al Watson. Watson originally from Baltimore, Maryland is a Morehouse College staff member, who works in academic affairs for the school.

Last year the team finished with a record of 3-2 and secured third place in the conference, despite being ranked 6th in the conference last year. This year, Coach Watson’s expectation is going undefeated. Not only is Morehouse Lacrosse Club aiming for the best record, but they also want to win the championship.

Coach Watson expressed confidence in his players, highlighting how he knows the team has skilled, and athletic players.

“I think we will go undefeated, to be perfectly honest”, Coach Waston said. “We have the athleticism, the guys have the drive, it’s just putting it all together. I think folks are gonna be pleasantly surprised to  know that they’re young black men at Morehouse who can outplay a lot of their comrades.”

The team captains, Joshua Vaughn, Jaiden Jones, Errol Tucker, and Orion Cooper all love Watson. They appreciate the effort Coach Watson provides and shares the same ambition for winning.

“We’re all out here just to put the effort in”, Jones said. “That determination to go win. Coach Al wants us to be the best that we can be, and we want to be the best as a team. So we want to make him proud, and he wants to make us proud”

A key word that this year’s lacrosse team follows is “effort”. The sentiment echoed by coach Watson is already gaining popularity amongst the players.

“I mean, everyone on this team has skill”, Vaughn said. “I think everyone has a skill that they’re really good at, but it’s all about putting in the effort, the intangibles, like in all sports. It’s the tiny little things like conditioning that puts the team over the top and we can’t just rely on the talent of each player, but it’s kind of like the camaraderie of believing and wanting to go the extra mile just to win the game”

As the new season approaches, the Morehouse Lacrosse Club is working on gaining partnerships from the greater Atlanta area. The team will prepare for their home opening game on February 1st.
